Weather has forced the Week 7 schedule to scatter its games to future dates and in the case of several non-region matchups like Savannah Christian at Blessed Trinity—the matchups were called off. There were rare Wednesday night games that had pushed their matchups up to the middle of the week to avoid Hurricane Helene, only to play in rainy conditions that came through the state prior to Helene’s landfall. No games took place on Thursday as entire school districts called off classes and just a couple dozen matchups are on the Friday schedule. There will also a significant chunk of games played on Saturday, including Apalachee’s first game since the deadly shooting at Clarke Central at 11 a.m., and one of Week’s 7’s most prestigious region battles between defending Class 6A state champion and Lee County.
On Friday, No. 4 ranked Mary Persons will host Upson-Lee in a now critical Region 2-3A matchup. It has been a rough stretch for Mary Persons that started with a 24-17 region loss to Troup on Sept. 13 and ended with a GHSA sanction that forced them to forfeit four games. Mary Persons had already lost to Troup in its fourth game of the season and so the forfeit did not impact that particular result, but the 55-0 win over Fayette County was reversed and so were both non-region games so the once 3-0 Mary Persons team is now 0-4 heading into tonight’s Homecoming matchup against Upson-Lee. Notably, Mary Persons has not been 0-4 since the 1961 season.
The positives for Mary Persons is that the Bulldogs have a 10-0 all-time record against Upson-Lee and win tonight would only further the reign over the rival Knights, however if the Knights were to ever score a win over Mary Persons, tonight would be particularly monumental because it would give Upson-Lee a two-game lead over them in the standings and wreck havoc on the playoff push. Region 2-3A is a nine-team region with Trinity Christian being the lone private school that. As of now, Sandy Creek, Whitewater, LaGrange, Troup, Spalding, Fayette County and Upson-Lee are all above Mary Persons’ 2-0 mark in the region and so this could be a must-win game if four teams end up finishing above the Bulldogs in the standings. A victory could also position Mary Persons right back in the fight for home field. No. 1 Sandy Creek still faces Spalding, Fayette County, Whitewater, Mary Persons and Troup. Whitewater still faces Trinity Christian, LaGrange, Spalding, Sandy Creek, Fayette County and Mary Persons. LaGrange is 3-1 in the region and has Whitewater, Mary Persons, Troup and Upson-Lee. The point is that only one team can finish undefeated in the region and Mary Persons likely only has room for one more loss in the region if they are going to finish in the top 4.
Score Atlanta will be covering all of the remaining Week 7 games with our Week 7 roundup so be sure to check out how this one unfolds. According to the Maxwell Computer Ratings, Mary Persons is just a three-point favorite over Upson-Lee. That is significant because all 10 previous matchups have been one by Mary Persons by seven or more points.
