Daily Dive: Grayson faces a five-week hiatus after latest cancellation

The statewide schedule experienced massive disruptions when Hurricane Helene ripped through it in late September and matchups have been cancelled, shuffled around and postponed to accommodate. Most teams have been able to get back to Friday night lights, but the Grayson Rams have been particularly impacted by not only the weather, but also the subsequent chemical leak that took place in Rockdale County. Grayson’s last game came on Sept. 20 and produced a 63-0 win over Grovetown. Its matchup against Newton was then postponed and the makeup date was cancelled and moved to the final week of the season.

It appeared that Grayson would finally be back on the field this upcoming Monday against Rockdale County—however—Rockdale County is still under virtual learning and a decision was made to forfeit that matchup. To compound the hiatus, Grayson is now on Fall break and was already set for a Week 10 bye week. As a result, the Rams’ next game will be played on Friday, Oct. 25 at South Gwinnett. That means a full five weeks will have passed between their 63-0 win over Grovetown on Sept. 20 and their Oct. 25 matchup against South Gwinnett. After the South Gwinnett game, Grayson will host Archer on Thursday, Oct. 31 and then will have a rare Tuesday night matchup against Heritage-Conyers on Nov. 5. The final matchup will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at Newton.

Head coach Santavious Bryant joined the Georgia High School Sports Daily on Friday to talk about his team’s approach to this long hiatus and said it was an opportunity for his players to focus on their school work and work off the field so they are completely ready to focus and regain their momentum when kickoff finally returns. Grayson has won five-straight (includes Rockdale County forfeit) since a tough 20-19 loss to Collins Hill in its opener and it would be a great story if the Rams can earn home field for the playoffs and put this unprecedented regular season slate in the rearview mirror as they battle for this year’s Class 6A state title.
