The Gainesville Red Elephants are one of the greatest examples of rich history and tradition when it comes to high school football in the state of Georgia. The school opened its doors for the first time in 1892 and the football team has proudly been called the Red Elephants since 1935—a name they adopted after the team was referred to looking like “a herd of Red Elephants” by an announcer in 1920. No other football team in the nation has their mascot and Gainesville sits third all-time on the state’s all-time win list with 786. Even with such a long history, this season is already giving a unique feel as the facilities and program enters the final phases of construction.
Gainesville is playing its first four games this season on the road as the $13.8 million renovations to City Park get completed. The stadium is expected to be functional by their Region 7-5A opener against Lanier and the environment is going to be absolutely electric. On Thursday night, Gainesville put up 31-straight points and closed out a 31-7 win over host Moody. It was the fist time Gainesville has earned a win against a program from Alabama and the team will take its 2-0 record into this week’s trip to Westlake. Gainesville opened the year on the road with a 41-3 win over Marietta.
