Daily Dive: Anna Varner lifts Bucs with game-winning touchdown

The Allatoona girls flag football team won the first-ever Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Flag Football Classic game this past Wednesday with a thrilling 12-6 victory over nationally-ranked Greenbrier. The Bucs made an impressive run last season to the finals before falling in a one-point heartbreaker (14-13) to Cobb County rival Pope—a team that had previously defeated them 40-7 in the regular season. Their historic run was defined by the progress made throughout the Bucs’ 22-3 season to nearly take home a state crown. This year is already off to an incredible start for Allatoona and head coach Jordan Davis has an opportunity to continue gaining steam with his talented group.

On Wednesday, the game was tied 6-6 with just 21 seconds left when Allatoona channeled its inner Philadelphia Eagles and used a direct snap to Anna Varner to plow her way into the endzone for the game-winning score. Varner is a senior two-sport athlete that also plays on the soccer team and is the daughter of long-time Allatoona educator and assistant E-Sports coach Emily Varner and former head football coach Gary Varner—who led Allatoona for its first 15 seasons (2008-22). Allatoona’s field is named after coach Varner and he made history by becoming the first Cobb County public school to win a state title since 1967 when his team captured the 2015 Class 5A state championship. North Cobb Christian and Allatoona’s campuses are just 6.7 miles apart.

Coach Varner retired and then took a job at North Cobb Christian last year as an assistant. The Eagles won the first region title in school history in 2023 and are highly ranked in Class A-3A Private this season. As for Allatoona’s Flag Football Team, Anna Varner and the 1-0 Bucs will return to action at Gary Varner Field on Oct. 14 for their home opener against River Ridge.
