Culture Change at North Oconee

The North Oconee Titans football team is off to their best start to a season in recent memory by starting off with a 3-1 record. The Titans have opened the season with three statement wins against Putnam County, Apalachee and Elbert County.

Coming off of a 1-9 record in his first season as head coach, Coach Tyler Aurandt knew things needed to change this season in order to get better results on the field and change the ways of the previous losing culture around the program. According to Coach Aurandt two of the biggest factors in this year’s hot start are directly related to their strong preparation this offseason. The team was determined to make great strides in the weight room this offseason and they worked much more on character and leadership development.

Offseason work has definitely been a huge factor in the Titans’ turnaround, but according to Coach Aurandt the biggest factor has come from the senior players on his team. “The senior class has done a tremendous job so far in being committed to excellence in everything that they do and it has rubbed off on the younger players” said Coach Aurandt.

Coach Aurandt realizes that they have a lot of tough region games coming up, but he is very confident that they can continue these winning ways. “As long as we stay true to the standard that has been set and play to that standard, we will give ourselves the opportunity to win football games.”

One of the senior leaders that has really taken to the challenge of being excellent in everything he does is quarterback Kaleb Sherrer. One of the big changes in Sherrer’s preparation has been his commitment to watching film. He also thinks the team has really bought into the standard that Coach Aurandt has set. “We want to be the best in every single aspect of the game. The desire to win is much higher and the mindset in the locker room has completely changed,” said Sherrer.

North Oconee will be back in action tonight against Franklin County. Titans fans should hope that key players like linebackers JT Dukes and Woody Barks can continue to anchor the defense, while Sheer and senior leader, wide receiver, DJ Defabio continue their hot start on the offensive side of the ball.
