The 2014 Metro PCS Corky Kell Classic will play all seven games at McEachern’s 13,000-seat Cantrell Stadium. For the first time in event history, the Kell Classic was expanded to two days this year. The first day (Friday, Aug. 22) was planned to play at McEachern, but the five-game marathon on Saturday, Aug. 23 was originally scheduled for the Georgia Dome.
The move from the Dome resulted in a conflict with the Falcons, which have first choice to the venue. Atlanta’s second preseason game at Houston was pushed back to Saturday, Aug. 16. The Falcons’ third preseason game is the closest simulation to a regular season game and Atlanta wanted the full seven days to prepare for it. Atlanta’s exhibition game with the Tennessee Titans will now occupy the Dome that weekend.
The Corky Kell has played outside the Dome twice in its history. In 1995, a tropical storm caused roof damage two days before and three games were moved to McEachern. In 1997, McEachern and Brookwood each hosted two games after fire damaged suites in the Dome. The biggest difference could be in Fahrenheit as the teams prepare outdoors. Last summer was fairly mild for Atlanta but the hottest day of 2013 was recorded on Aug. 29 with a high 92°F, according to weatherspark.com.
There was also a change for two sets of opponents. Colquitt County was originally scheduled to play North Gwinnett, but will now play Mill Creek. McEachern, which was slated to play Mill Creek will now play North Gwinnett. McEachern and North Gwinnett faced in the state semifinals last year and the Bulldogs were able to edge McEachern 27-21 to advance to the championship.
