The final game of the Kell Classic featured two teams that have never played against each other. Walton and Peachtree Ridge did battle in the night cap game at the Georgia Dome and Walton was able to come away with a 26-14 victory.
It was Tyren Jones leading the Raider attack. He had a key 20-yard run in the Raiders opening offensive series and that led to a Parker McLeod 5-yard touchdown run.
Peachtree Ridge was able to answer early in the second quarter thanks to a muffed punt return by Walton’s Dakota Richardson, in which Ahmad Harris recovered at the Raider 20-yard line. That led to a Diandre Atwater 9-yard score to tie the game at seven.
The Lions looked to take the lead later in the second as they were driving towards Walton territory. But Billy Best’s pass was picked off by Dedric Sundby which was returned to the Lions 33-yard line. Two plays later. Jones scored on a 39-yard touchdown run to take the lead once again.
The Lions weren’t able to score again until late in the third quarter, as Atwater scored on four yards out to tie the game at 14. It was a long drive for the Lions which was kept alive due to two pass interference penalties called on Walton.
But the Raiders weren’t phased by the Lions tying the game because on the first play of the ensuing series, Jones scores from 80-yards out to take the 20-14 lead. Walton was able to add on to their lead midway through the fourth quarter as Richardson scored on a 90-yard punt return to increase the Raider lead to 12.
Jones ended the day with 213 rushing yards and two scores with 125 of those yards coming in the second half. With the win the Raiders not only improve their record to 1-0, they help Cobb County win the Kell Classic with a 3-1 record as Lassiter and McEachern won their games earlier in the day.
Walton will have next week off and will be on the road on Sept. 2 to face Milton. Peachtree Ridge will also have next week off, before they travel to Roswell to face the Hornets. That game will also be played on Sept. 2.
