McEachern quarterback Trent Thompson will remember this game for the rest of his life.
With less than two minutes left against North Gwinnett in the Kell Classic, Thompson led the Indians on a 75-yard drive which ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Chris Nwagbara to take a 20-17 lead with 10 seconds remaining.
North Gwinnett tried to make a comeback, but quarterback Scott Hosch’ s pass was picked off by C.J. Cody which he returned for 39 yards and scored the final touchdown of the night to give the Indians the 26-17 win.
Both teams could not get anything going on offense early in the first quarter. McEachern looked to score their first points of the game late in the first after North Gwinnett’s Donnie Miles fumbled at midfield and was recovered by Edward Thomas.
But the Indians were forced to punt and that led to a big return by Alex Boyd which put the Bulldogs in scoring position at the Indians 38-yard line. Two plays later, Hosch threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chad Scott to take the 7-0 lead.
Later in the second quarter, McEachern get on the board for the first time with a Nicholas St. Germain 21-yard field goal to cut the Bulldog lead to four. On the ensuing drive, Hosch threw an interception to Thomas which put the Indians at the 42-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Trent Thompson threw a 42-yard touchdown strike to Amba Etta-Tawo to put the Indians ahead by three.
The Bulldogs were able to answer on the ensuing drive as Hosch threw a 54-yard pass to Miles to put the Bulldogs in scoring territory, that led to a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hosch to Scott to take the 14-10 lead.
McEachern struck next late in the third quarter, as Nicholas St. Germain kicked a 30-yard field goal to trim the Bulldog lead to one.
But North Gwinnett answered late in the fourth quarter as Alexjandro Arroyave nailed a 25-yard field goal to put the Bulldogs up by four.
It was the first time these two schools have met and to say it was a game both teams will remember will be an understatement.
McEachern goes 1-0 for the year and will be back on the field on Sept. 2 when they travel to Lowndes. North Gwinnett drops to 0-1 and will be back in action next Saturday when they host East St. Louis (Ill.).
