Brookwood won the war of attrition in a four-overtime thriller in the first game of the evening in the Corky Kell Classic presented by Atlanta & North Georgia Building Trades Council on Thursday. In the end, a 1-yard touchdown run by Alexander Diggs proved the difference as the Broncos won 40-34.
“I thought we had won it five times and I thought we had lost it five times,” Brookwood coach Philip Jones told the AJC.
Brookwood scored first in the first overtime on a 6-yard run by Diggs to take a 21-14 lead. Dacula responded on a 7-yard touchdown run from Kyle Efford to pull even. Dacula controlled the ball first in the second overtime and Georgia Tech-commit Kaleb Edwards rushed to the 3-yardline allowing Efford to punch in the go-ahead score 28-21. A pass from Brookwood quarterback Dylan Lonergan to Stone Bonner on a must-have heave kept the Broncos alive and tied the game at 28. Lonergan put Brookwood ahead 34-28 on a 15-yard pass to Denylon Morrissette. Dacula tied with a short Efford run before Diggs’ game-winner.
Both programs had their chance in regulation and Brookwood scored first on a 77-yard pass from Lonergran to Morrissette with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Edwards tied the game with an acrobatic diving touchdown run to the left side of the endzone. The Georgia Tech commit, who plays both sides of the ball, followed a line of blockers until two Brookwood defenders blocked his path. He left the ground at the 3-yardline and flipped over the defenders at the apex of his leap, landing well inside the endzone.
“Tonight was crazy,” Morrissette told the AJC. “We came out here too big-headed and thought we were going to roll over them. They came out and played a great game, but we got it at the end of the day. That’s all that mattered.’
Early in the fourth quarter, Edwards rushed to the right side of the field and collided with a cameraman and a defender simultaneously and was shaken up on the play. However, the Falcons persisted without their star on the next play and took the lead on a 3-yard touchdown run from Kyle Efford 14-7. Brookwood tied the game at 14 and sent the game to overtime on a 34-yard pass from Lonegran to Morrissette.
Lonergan was 28-of-43 passing for 433 yards and four touchdowns to lead Brookwood. Morrissette had 12 receptions for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Diggs made 14 carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns for Brookwood. Bonner had two receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown. Trey Staley grabbed one interception for the Broncos.
Blaine Jenkins was 9-of-24 passing to lead Dacula. Efford finished with 23 carries for 92 yards and four touchdowns. Edwards had 14 carries for 80 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
“This game shows that when it comes down to it, at the end of the game we’ve got what it takes,” Morrissette said.
