In the second game of the Kell Classic, the Brookwood Broncos faced the Walton Raiders and with the help of Jamaal Cole and Nick Tompkins, the Broncos took care of the Raiders 27-10.
The Broncos came into the game with a plethora of seniors returning from last year, led by quarterback Ben McLane and linebacker Cameron Lynch. But it was junior running back Tompkins who was the story of the game, using his vision to avoid Walton defenders and put the Broncos in scoring position throughout the contest. Tompkins had 100 yards before the first half was over and ended the day with 127 yards on 14 carries.
But Brookwood also had another running back that did some damage. Sophomore Jamal Cole used his speed to fly past Walton defenders and ended the day with 116 yards on 14 carries including a 49-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to secure the win for the Broncos in the third quarter.
Quarterback Ben McLane holds every passing record for the Broncos, but because of the running game, McLane did not have to throw the ball as much as expected. He ended the day 5-of-11 with 104 yards and one touchdown, which he threw to fullback/linebacker Cameron Lynch in the fourth quarter to put the Broncos up by 17.
For Walton, they were able to hang with the Broncos in the first half, as the game was tied at 10 going into halftime. Like Brookwood, they were moving the ball via the running game with Jim Houge and Kyle Vorster, who scored the lone touchdown for the Raiders in the second quarter.
However, quarterback Bradley Kilborn had a hard time finding open receivers downfield due to Lynch harassing him all game long. As for the Raiders on the defensive side they had no answers for Tompkins and Cole, who were able to find open holes throughout the game.
Brookwood improves their record to 1-0 for the year and their next game will pit them against Collins Hill on September 3. With Grayson losing earlier today, the Broncos have a leg up in Region 8, Class AAAAA and could make the matchup on October 29 between the two rivals one that could determine the region title.
Walton fall to 0-1 for the year and will have next week off before taking on Milton. Because this game was against a non-region opponent, the Raiders playoff chances are not damaged by any means but they do have a five-game losing streak dating back to last season. A win against Milton is a top priority for the East Cobb school.
