The Georgia High School state basketball playoffs wrapped up this week with Whitefield Academy making a run for the Class A title. Whitefield, the defending champions, were part of the semi-finals for the seventh time in nine years, taking on Wesleyan on Saturday, March 13, in the championship game. The Wolf Pack was unable to defend their title, with Wesleyan taking a hard-fought 63-52 victory. The game was brutal from the onset, featuring 51 fouls called and 65 free throws attempted. Andrew Freking led the offense for Wesleyan, racking up 26 points, 18 of which occurred in the second half. Tekele Cotton led Whitefield with 18 points, while Chris Lovelance tallied 16 and Kennard Backman added 11. The championship was the second in four years for Wesleyan, as well as the second time in three years that both the girls and boys have taken their respective title.
THE BOYS OF SUMMER …
With the basketball playoffs in the books, baseball season is now in full swing. After opening up the season with a tie and a win, Marietta High School recorded their third straight loss on Thursday, falling to Pope 6-3. The baseball schedule for the upcoming weekend is full as well with 14 different Cobb County games taking place on Friday. Whitefield, Walker and Sprayberry are all set to begin play at 5:00 p.m. Marietta will look to improve upon their record when they take on Etowah at 5:55, with Campbell, Hillgrove, Kell, Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, McEachern, North Cobb and Pope to begin play at the time as well. Allatoona is set to get started at 6 p.m. and Walton will round out the day’s schedule with a 7 p.m. start time.
