Baseball season was in full swing in Cobb County this week, with numerous teams facing off throughout the week and into the weekend. In Region 7, Class 4A, Hillgrove earned a hard-fought 9-7 road victory over Sequoyah on Thursday. Hillgrove’s offense was strong from the onset, scoring three runs in the first inning on bases-loaded walks by Justin Motley and Michael Adkins, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bret Wishon. Sequoyah got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning, but the Hawks plated another in the second and two more in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Hillgrove would stretch the lead to 9-1 by the end of the fourth. However, Sequoyah rebounded and chipped away at the lead, before pulling to within 9-7 in the fifth. However, the Chiefs would not get any closer. Hillgrove’s starter Jeremy Brown earned the win after throwing 3 2/3 innings. Hillgrove added an 8-7 win the next night against Rome as well.
Another team with a strong week, as well as an impressive season thus far, was South Cobb. The 8-4 Eagles have already recorded more victories this season than in all of last year. After a disappointing 15-1 loss on Thursday, the Eagles got back on the right track on Friday with a strong performance from senior first baseman Michael Dunagan. Dunagan threw a complete game, allowing the Eagles to come from behind on their way to a 3-2 win and their eighth victory of the season.
