COBB BEAT: Lady Trojans take county title; Wheeler hoops on a roll

The Lassiter girls lived up to their high expectations this week, taking first place at the Cobb County Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the Mountain View Aquatic Center. With the state championship meet on the horizon, Lassiter took home its ninth county title in the past 10 years, racking up 624 overall points in the process. Walton, the nearest competitor, took second with 578 points. In addition to an impressive team win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:32.71), the Lady Trojans had several individual victories as well. Sammie Bosma led the squad, winning both the 50 and 100 freestyle, while setting a meet record in the 100 with a time of 51.35. Lassiter also got wins from Sarah Williford in the 500 freestyle (4:58.67), Erin Reisinger in the 100 backstroke (56.20) and Shannon O’Malley in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.45). Following Lassiter and Walton in the scoring, Pope finished third at the meet (349), with Harrison taking fourth (299), and Kennesaw Mountain placing fifth (289).

Meanwhile, on the boys side, following a disqualification of their 400-yard freestyle relay team in Friday’s preliminaries, Lassiter was unable to maintain their first place standing after Walton won the event to take the top spot with 495.5 points, while the Trojans finished up with 457. The disqualification came after a Lassiter swimmer failed to get out of the water after finishing his leg of the race before his teammate made his first turn. Individually for Walton, Ben Sheppard took home wins in the 50 freestyle (21.45) and 100 butterfly (52.17). Brian McClintock was also impressive for the Raiders, winning both the 100 freestyle (49.96) and 100 backstroke (52.07). Lassiter received some strong performances as well, with Jimmy Yoder earning the win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.44, a new meet record. Yoder also took first in the 500 freestyle (4:38.66). Pope took third place in the meet, finishing up with 413.5 points, followed by Harrison (307) and Kennesaw Mountain (257), to round out the scoring.

ON THE HARDWOOD …

In basketball news, Kennesaw Mountain earned a hard-fought 76-66 victory over South Cobb on Saturday. Led by their 6-6 forward Darryl Durham, who accounted for 29 points, the Mustangs surged ahead in the second quarter, going on a 15-0 run. South Cobb pulled to within striking distance a few times throughout the remainder of the game, getting as close as five points, however Kennesaw Mountain held on for the victory to improve to 12-7 on the season. Torian Singleton added 16 points for the Mustangs, with Erik Edwards collecting 15, and Matthew Augustine adding 12. Devyn Morse led South Cobb with 15.

On Friday night, Walton (14-6, 6-3) racked up another win, putting them in second place in the subregion behind Wheeler (16-4, 7-2). The 73-68 victory came against Campbell (15-4, 5-3) who now sits just a half game back of Walton in the subregion. Ryan Harrow led the attack against Campbell, accumulating 29 points. G’Mitri Rice was second in scoring for the Raiders with 16, while Kamren Belin added 10. Jack Shanks and Justin Seymour led the scoring for Campbell, racking up 19 and 18 points, respectively.

For Class 5A, Wheeler maintained its No. 4 ranking from last week, while Walton held steady at No. 6. After defeating both Milton and Walton last week, and earning the 73-62 victory against Lassiter on Friday, Wheeler is on a four-game win streak, but still has some challenges ahead with a rematch against Walton nearing on Feb. 12. McEachern, meanwhile, fell down one spot to No. 8 despite winning its last nine games, including victories over North Cobb, Marietta and Harrison last week. In 4A, Hillgrove continued to climb, moving from No. 7 to No. 5, while Whitefield Academy upheld its top spot in the Class A poll.

On the girls side, McEachern (16-4, 11-3), which is currently ranked No. 9 in the Class 5A polls, added another win on Friday, defeating Marietta 57-46. McEachern now sits in second place, only a half game behind North Cobb, in the Region 5-AAAAA standings. The Lady Indians were led in the game by Dominique Wilson, who contributed 25 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Mo Darby was second in scoring for McEachern with 13. For Marietta, Ciera Echols racked up 15 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils in scoring.

Campbell climbed from No. 9 to No. 7 in the Class 5A polls this week, with North Cobb and McEachern right behind at No. 8 and No. 9 respectively.
