Friday night was a tough experience for the kids once the game started, but overall, playing Carrollton made us a better football team. The parents, kids, and the coaches, were very impressed to see such a facility. I grew up in a small town (Dade City, FL) about 30 miles north of Tampa, and football was king there, much the same as it is in Carrollton.
For some of our kids and parents, football is just something they do in the Fall…it isn’t their way of life, and our area of North Fulton has 6 teams now, so that small town feeling just doesn’t exist. It was cool for the people involved with our program to see high school football at its best. As for the game, our kids fought and played hard, but the disparity in the two teams was pretty evident from the start. The best part of the experience was how pissed our guys were after the game. A couple of years ago, our kids didn’t mind losing. It has taken a couple of years in the weight room and working them on the field for them to really care about the product on the field. As a coach, it is great to see. A team’s success usually will directly correlate to the talent on the field and the quality of the coaching staff; however, in years when the talent is lean, dedication and commitment to the cause can help make up for it, and years when the talent is high, the same dedication and commitment can lead to championships.
