Class ADI Blog: Southwest-Macon boys basketball heating up at the right time

Southwest-Macon are playing some of their best basketball of the season and are heating up at the right time.

Southwest has put together its second-consecutive 20-win season as they are currently sitting with a 21-2 overall record as well as an 11-2 record in Region 2-ADI, in second place in the region.

Having already eclipsed their win total from a season ago, last year’s Patriots finished 20-9 and made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A boys basketball state championships before they were defeated by Columbia, 55-34, to end their season.

The team has not only moved past last season’s results, but also have moved classifications as well, moving from Class 2A to Class ADI this season where they have thrived.

This year, the Patriots are averaging 66 points per game on the season as well as shooting 42% from the field.

The scoring for Southwest is led by three players who all sit in the top-50 in the class in scoring as the offense for the Patriots has been hard to stop.

A trio of combo-guards in Chase Dupree, Brandon Ashley, and CJ Howard have been some of the main sources of offense in 2025 for Southwest as they are each averaging over double-digits heading into the region tournament.

Dupree is seventh in Class A-DI in highest scoring averages on the season as the junior is averaging a little over 20 points per game, six points higher than last year’s average during his sophomore season. Along with his 20 points per game, Dupree is also averaging close to six rebounds and a little over three assists per game, able to help out the Patriots in any way he can on the court.

While Dupree leads Southwest in scoring, Ashley and Howard have proven to be viable scoring options throughout this season, with Ashley and Howard both averaging close to 14 points per game.

The upperclassmen-led Patriots saw a quarterfinals appearance a year ago, but now have their sights set on a bigger prize: playing for a state championship in front of their home crowd at the Macon Centreplex.

Before thinking about the state championship, the Patriots will have to get through a tough region tournament in Region 2-ADI as they will have to face the likes of teams such as Dublin, East Laurens and Dodge County.
