Class A-Division I Blog: A look ahead at the Lamar County Trojans football team

Heading into the 55th season of the programs existence, the Lamar County Trojans football team has flown under the radar for the last couple years.

Compiling a 9-3 a year ago under head coach Travis Ellington, the Trojans are poised to make it back to the postseason for a fourth year in a row. Lamar County lost to eventual champion, Northeast in the second round, 21-10.

Ellington has led the Trojans for the last four seasons, totaling a 34-12 record during his time at the helm.

Since 2022, the Trojans have made the second round for the last three seasons and haven’t advanced beyond it since 2013. During that season under Franklin Stephens, the Trojans made their first ever appearance in a state championship game, losing to Lovett 14-7. The Trojans went 14-1 during that season.

In 2025, the Trojans are led by rising senior Kaden Carter as he did it all for Lamar County during his junior season. Carter recorded 857 yards on the ground as well as 13 total touchdowns on 132 carries  including rushing, catching and throwing for scores a year ago.

Along with over 800 yards on the ground, Carter threw for 143 yards as well along with two touchdowns through the air, showing off his versatility for the Trojans when they needed him most.

Defensively, Carter was the second-leading tackler on the team, recording 65 tackles a year ago to go along with nine tackles for loss, making an impact on both sides of the ball.

According to 247Sports.com, Carter is listed as a 3-star recruit with offers from some of the top college football programs around the country. Carter’s offer list consists of Michigan, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, NC State and a handful of other schools that are looking to bring in Carter to continue his football career.

Along with Carter, the Trojans leading tackler from a season ago returns to the team, sophomore linebacker Ajavion Vereen who totaled 74 total tackles along with four tackles for loss.

Offensively, junior Caleb Laster will be returning to the Trojans for his final year of high school football as he totaled three touchdowns and two games over a 100 yards on the ground last season.
