Class A Div. II experienced movement in the Week 8 baseball rankings and the classification is looking increasingly wide-open as many of the teams represented in the poll rack up signature wins and climb up the region standings. Region 2 has been the dominant group up to this point of the season with three teams represented in the top 4 of the poll and all three of those teams were tied in region play before this past week with No. 1 Lanier County, No. 3 Charlton County and No. 4 Irwin County all at 11-2 in region play. Today’s blog will update the region standings in Region 2 and preview the final stretch of the regular season with the latest Score Atlanta poll.
No. 1 ranked Lanier County fell 4-3 to Tiftarea Academy in non-region play to snap the Bulldogs’ eight-game win-streak. Because it was a non-region loss and Class A Division II does not use the Postseason Rating System (PSR) to seed the playoffs, it did not impact the current battle. Lanier County, Charlton County and Irwin County all still have just two losses in the region. Lanier County won each series 2-1 in the head-to-head with Charlton County and Irwin County and therefore owns the tiebreaks. The Bulldogs have six games left on the regular season schedule and all six are region matchups with three-straight against Clinch County and three-straight against Brooks County. Clinch County has already been swept by Charlton and Irwin County, while Brooks County has been swept by Charlton County and will play Irwin before closing out with Lanier. Nonetheless, Clinch County at 9-6 in the region is currently at No. 4 behind its three ranked region opponents and the Panthers swept Echols County in all three matchups and the Bobcats are the next closest team in the eight-team region at 5-10-giving them a four-game lead and the tiebreaker with just six games left. Clinch will play Lanier County this week, while Echols County has No. 3 Charlton County.
At No. 2, Baconton Charter extended its win-streak to 11-straight games and improved to 20-1 overall and 12-0 in Region 1 with a 9-1 win over Miller County this week. The Blazers will close out their two-game series with Miller County tonight. Currently, Baconton Charter is at the top of Region 1 with its 12-0 mark and there is a battle with Seminole County and Miller County for No. 2. Seminole County is 12-2 in the region and Miller County. Stay tuned for this region race because Seminole County and Miller County are on a collision course and will meet on April 10 and April 14 for a pivotal series.
Bowdon has won five-straight games and is enjoying a 7-0 Region 7 record with just two region matchups left. The Red Devils have six total games left in the regular season—including a battle with No. 7 Crawford County on April 12. Bowdon’s two region games are at home against Manchester on April 15 and Trion on April 17. Bowdon has already defeated both teams and secured the No. 1 seed out of their small four-team region.
