The Class 6A baseball rankings have had Etowah at No. 1 and Walton at No. 2 for the last three-straight weeks and now the two state championship contenders will meet for three games this week starting Game 1 tonight at Walton and then a double-header on Thursday at Etowah. Both of the teams are 11-1 in Region 5-6A heading into the series and lead Cherokee, which is currently 7-2 and still has three games against Etowah after dropping 2-of-3 earlier to Walton and therefore giving the Raiders the edge should it come down to a potential head-to-head tie-breaker. Etowah is coming off a championship in Class 6A last year and returned just five starters. Despite losing some major contributors from last year’s title run, the Eagles are 18-1 this season and have maintained their dominant pitching and offensive prowess from last year’s 35-4 campaign. The roster boasts outfielders Trevor Condon (Tennessee-commit), Deion Cole (Georgia Tech-commit) and Carson Moore. Sophomore Caden Borcherding is the No. 1 rated catcher in the state for the Class of 2027 and the bullpen features Jackson Rose (UNC-commit), Matthew Sharman (UGA-commit) and Jackson Norwood—a sophomore right handed pitcher that also lines up at short stop. Colin Anderson is a Class of 2028 freshman that has joined the rotation as a promising third baseman.
Walton’s lineup features 6-foot-6, 225-pound first baseman and pitcher Logan Wideman and 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior infielder Jackson Taylor—providing the Raiders with power and experience that has helped fuel the team’s 17-3 start.
Similarly to this region battle, East Coweta and Carrollton are poised for a critical Region 2 and top 10 showdown this week. East Coweta is off to a 16-2 start and is 5-0 in region play with an eight-game win-streak heading into Tuesday’s home game against Carrollton. The teams will play Game 2 at Carrollton on Wednesday before closing the series on Friday at East Coweta. Carrollton is 13-5 this season and 3-0 in Region 2 play with a seven-game win-streak heading into the series.
