Class 6A Blog: Region championships on the line with two weeks left

There are less than two weeks left of the GHSA baseball regular season and most teams have just 5-6 games left on the slate with a mix of premier non-region matchups and crucial region battles that will determine the final playoff seeding. Today’s blog includes the remaining schedules for all of the teams in the latest Class 6A rankings in addition to the most up-to-date region standings for all eight regions in the classification. At No. 1, Etowah suffered a 5-1 loss to Class 5A No. 1 ranked Houston County. This result came on the heels of an 18-9 win over New York’s Stony Brook and a 9-0 win over Newton the day prior to the matchup with the Bears. Etowah is enjoying a comfortable lead in the Region 5 standings and can clinch the top seed with a win against Cherokee—which the Eagles will face on Tuesday and then again on Friday with a double-header. Cherokee needs to steal a game or two against Etowah to shake up the standings. The Warriors took 1-of-3 against Walton and will also have a three-game series to play against North Paulding after the Etowah series. Cherokee could take the top seed if they win out and could also fall to the No. 4 seed depending on the results against Etowah and North Paulding and then how Walton does next week against Marietta.

At No. 2, North Gwinnett is in a tie with Parkview at the top of the Region 7 standings. The Bulldogs have two more region games on the schedule for next week against Peachtree Ridge after they face three Tennessee teams this week. As for Parkview, they will close out the regular season with two critical Region 7 games against archrival Brookwood. North Gwinnett, Parkview, Brookwood and Peachtree Ridge have all secured playoff spots, but the final region games will solidify the final picture.

Buford owns the tie-breaker against Mill Creek and can clinch Region 8 next week when it closes out the season against Dacula. Before that region showdown, Buford will close out Tuesday’s double-header against No. 9 ranked Grayson. At No. 4, Lowndes can earn the top seed out of Region 1 with a win against Valdosta—which they will take on this week in a three-game series.
