The Etowah Eagles polished off a clean sweep over Region 5 rival Walton last week to improve to 20-1 overall and grow its win-streak to 12-straight games. In the latest MaxPreps National rankings, Etowah is the No. 4 rated team in the nation and is the highest-rated Georgia team regardless of classification. Now, Etowah will enter its Spring Break period of its schedule and will take on out-of-state opponents before the busy stretch continues with matchups against Newton and Houston County. On Wednesday, Etowah will face Kentucky’s Southern High School and then Thursday features a matchup with Stony Brook out of New York. Stony Brook will take on East Coweta on Friday and offer solid metric to measure how both top 10 teams stack up against the Bears.
Stony Brook is a phenomenal program that is 7-1-1 this season and is coming off a run to the 2024 NYAIS State Championship. The Bears opened the year with an 11-1 victory over Rabun Gap and have also defeated Druid Hills, Peachtree Ridge, First Presbyterian Day and Clarke Central. The program will have another heavy dose of Georgia matchups starting on Thursday with Etowah and Houston County and finishing with East Coweta on Friday.
North Gwinnett made a major leap in the poll this week to No. 2, but has a tough week ahead to maintain its position in rankings. The Bulldogs will travel to Parkview on Wednesday before hosting the Panthers on Friday. The team will have several days off until a road trip to Tennessee’s Greeneville on April 9. Two-time defending state champion Lowndes has three Florida teams on its upcoming slate with Trinity Christian hosting the Vikings on Tuesday and then trips to Creekside and Suwannee on Wednesday for a double-header.
At No. 4, Parkview is looking to bounce back from its loss to Loganville and will visit Duluth on Tuesday before back-to-back top 10 showdowns with North Gwinnett. The Walton Raiders dropped from No. 2 to No. 5 in this week’s poll after getting swept by Etowah and will have three non-region matchups to get back on track. Walton will visit Hillgrove on Tuesday before hosting Lovett on Wednesday. The Raiders will have a week off after the Lovett game before travelling to Carrollton on April 10.
Buford has been comfortably positioned in the top 10 all season long and will have an opportunity to gain ground this week with two matchups against Discovery and a big-time matchup with Class 5A No. 3 ranked Loganville on Thursday. North Paulding could benefit from Walton getting swept by Etowah, but will need to keep winning since Walton was able to sweep the Wolfpack head-to-head. North Paulding can keep up its fight for a No. 2 seed this week with a home matchup against North Cobb on Wednesday and then a Friday double-header at North Cobb for another pair of region games.
East Coweta is coming off a great week where the Indians swept region rival Carrollton and has a busy slate ahead. The Indians will host Class 5A No. 1 ranked Houston County on Friday to open its double-header before a showdown with Stony Brook in the nightcap. On Saturday, East Coweta will host Locust Grove.
Grayson has heated up after a slow start to the season and is looking back to form after making a run to last year’s state finals. The Rams will have three region matchups against Heritage-Conyers this week to prepare them for a top 10 battle with Buford next Tuesday. Tift County made its debut in the poll this week at No. 10 and has a busy upcoming slate with a cross-classification showdown with Cairo on Tuesday and then three-straight out-of-state matchups with Florida’s Holmes County, Taylor County and Port St. Joe.
