The GHSA Basketball state playoffs are underway and the March to Macon will be the top development within Class 6A. Last season, the Grayson Rams made history by winning first-ever state titles in boys and girls and completing a title sweep in the process. The Rams are major favorites again this season, but there is ample depth surrounding them and the brackets have already caused a stir when it comes to the gauntlet on their side of the bracket.
The Grayson boys defeated Newton 84-74 for the Region 4 title and earning the top seed has set up a first-round matchup with Harrison. The Rams (25-2) have won eight-straight games and are still undefeated within the state of Georgia with both losses coming to out-of-state teams (Columbus FL and Sierra Canyon CA). This is very similar to last season when Grayson lost just two out-of-state games and won the state title with a 30-2 overall record. As a result of this in-state dominance, the last Georgia school to defeat Grayson was Wheeler (67-55) in the 2023 semifinals.
On the girls side, the Lady Rams have won 26-straight games and defeated Newton 50-44 to earn the No. 1 overall seed. The Lady Rams dropped a 68-62 matchup with Cherokee to open the season and have been flawless since. Grayson’s bid for back-to-back titles will continue with a home game against No. 4 seed Harrison in the first round.
Around the class boys: The first week of the baseball season was hectic in Class 6A and the top 10 has already seen significant shakeup. Etowah earned the No. 1 spot after a blazing 5-0 start and replaced two-time defending champion Lowndes after defeating the Vikings 9-3 in the head-to-head season opener the two title contenders met in. Walton moved up to No. 2 from No. 4 after a 4-0 start and North Paulding’s 4-0 start moved the Wolfpack up from No. 7 to No. 3. Buford climbed from No. 8 to No. 4 with a 2-1 win over Parkview and sent the Panthers down from No. 3 to No. 5. Lowndes fell all the way to No. 6 after also dropping a 5-2 loss to Lambert before scoring a 4-0 victory over Starr’s Mill to achieve a 1-2 start. Lambert replaced Brookwood at No. 10 after the win and Grayson fell from No. 5 to No. 8 after two tough losses to Parkview (9-7) and Cherokee Bluff (12-3). Carrollton comes in at No. 9 this week after a strong 2-0 start that includes a 14-2 road win over Lassiter and an 8-2 road win over Richmond Hill.
Around the class girls: The Campbell Spartans opened their soccer season ith a 9-0 victory over LaGrange. Mireya Stephenson netted a hat-trick as the team took the Creek Cup at Northview High School. Sydney Mitchell, Maia Dahlen, Nekesa Segero, Madeleine Pearce, Mahi Hernandez and Dallas Jackson also each scored goals.
