Class 3A No. 3-ranked Jefferson girls trek to No. 5 Oconee County; No. 7 White County faces 1A-3A Private No. 8 GAC

Two ranked girls matchups highlight Class 3A play when No. 5 Jefferson travels to No. 5 Oconee County and No. 7 White County treks to Class 1A-3A Private No. 8 Greater Atlanta Christian Tuesday evening.

Oconee County is 11-4 and 1-0 in Region 8 play after beating East Hall 54-32 Friday. The team’s four losses were to No. 7 White County twice (41-38, Nov. 22; 49-23, Dec. 17) and North Oconee twice (56-31, Nov. 26; 61-55 OT, Dec. 3).

Senior Julie Azeltine has scored 15 points per game, leading the Warriors in scoring ahead of sophomore Eliza Oechsle, who adds 11 points per game with a team-leading four assists per game. Senior Elizabeth Wynn is scoring eight points with a team-leading eight rebounds per game while sophomore Jill Daniel adds eight points with four rebounds and two steals per game.

On the other side of the court, Jefferson is 11-3 overall and 1-0 in Region 8 play after a 72-14 victory against West Hall Friday and is coming off a 53-51 victory against East Forsyth Saturday. The Dragons’ three losses were all to higher-classed and ranked competition — Class 4A No. 6 North Oconee (66-56, Nov. 19), Class 6A No. 10 Buford (57-55, Nov. 26) and Class 6A No. 4 Newton (67-42, Dec. 14). Since the Newton loss, Jefferson has won eight consecutive games.

Speaking of No. 7 White County, the Warriors are 11-4 and 3-1 in Region 6 play after beating North Hall 67-43, Chestatee 59-50 and Johnson-Gainesville 77-8. Its only league loss was to top-ranked Pickens 50-46 Friday. Its opponent is Region 6 rival GAC, who will be competing in a regular region schedule before being seeded in the Class 1A-3A Private playoff bracket.

The Spartans are 9-4 and 2-2 in region play and led in scoring by sophomore Cobi Obi, who is scoring 10.4 points with nine rebounds per game. Freshman Barri Newman adds 10 points with four rebounds and two steals per game. Junior Asia Johnson adds four assists, four rebounds and eight points per game.
