When architect Mark McCumber laid out Chimney Oaks Golf Club in 1998, he left a brilliant gem waiting to be discovered in Banks County. The best Class 2A boys and girls golfers will spend Monday and Tuesday uncovering McCumber’s greatness.
Nestled upon rolling terrain in Homer, just north of Athens, Chimney Oaks is relatively forgiving off the tee and features a links-style feel. Playing 6,878 yards from the back tees, the course can be made as long as a golfer might want.
The greens at Chimney Oaks were renovated in 2018 and recognized by GolfAdvisor.com as the 5th-most improved golf course in the nation in 2019. The course features a grill and event center, a pool, tennis course, and an 18-hole putting course.
The Forge is the club’s indoor/outdoor training facility which utilizes Trackman equipment and simulators to help members and guests hone their games.
On the Class 2A golf side of things, Mount Paran won the team’s first state championship last season on the boys side and the top-ranked Eagles are looking to add another title. The team leads a packed Top 5 with Walker, Fellowship Christian, Athens Academy and Banks County chasing.
On the girls side, top-ranked Pierce County enters the tournament as the two-time, back-to-back, 2022, 2023 defending champion looking for the team’s sixth title. Pierce won championships in 2000, 2005, 2019, 2022 and last season. Mount Paran, Fellowship Christian, Jeff Davis and Athens Academy are ranked in the top 5 entering the state tournament.
