South Forsyth has probably its best golf squad under coach Matt Loveless and is out to prove that its program belongs among the state’s elite. The War Eagles are off to a fast start already this season. The team is talented and experienced with five seniors in Matt Mierzejewski, Austin Ujhelyi, Sean Stanfill, Brian Bowes, and Connor Paton. Chris Guglielmo, a freshman who has already shot the low round of the year with a 69 at the Apple Mountain Invitational, has also contributed heavily to the team’s early success. Next up for the team is the Gainesville Big Red Shootout which has been rescheduled for March 22nd. South Forsyth is the two-time defending champion at that tournament and the War Eagles look to make an even bigger statement in their attempted three-peat.
The Etowah boys lacrosse team feels like they have a fighter’s chance to sneak into the state tournament. The Eagles have won their first two games this season beating Starr’s Mill and Campbell with solid play from their attackers and midfielders. However, the leader of the team has been goalie, Ryan Peters, who has already received several scholarship offers.
North Forsyth got its first win on the year Monday against Duluth 14-3 at Raider Valley. Going into the game, midfielder Cody Betke (17 ground balls), attacker Zach Work (7 points), and goalie Tanner Short (83 saves) were leading the team in most offensive and defensive categories. On March 24th, the Raiders will host 2009 state semifinalist and region-leader Milton.
