After an 0-3 start to the season, the Lambert boys baseball team has won four-straight games and have only given up three runs in their last three appearances. With a team built around solid pitching, it seemed only a matter of time before the Longhorns would overcome their slow start, in which they lost all three games by only one run. Right handed pitcher Eric Regan has lead a good starting rotation with a 0.91 ERA after his first three starts. Zack Schlosser has also made his presence filled at the closer position and has not given up a run in his first two appearances. Over the current win streak, the biggest victory came over subregion and county rival West Forsyth, 2-1. Kyle Watson scored on a two-out hit by Caden Bailey in the third and Kyler Clifton walked with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to bring in David Broadus. Lambert will host another county opponent, North Forsyth, on Saturday afternoon in a matchup of two teams that have been on win streaks as of late. The Raiders are lead by utility player Christopher Smith, who has signed a national letter of intent with Kennesaw State.
North Forsyth won their second game in a row by one run pushing their current win streak to four with a win over Blessed Trinity. A based loaded walk to Colton Wagoner and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Slaton, both coming in the sixth inning, gave the raiders a 4-3 advantage which was the eventual final score.
GOLF AND LACROSSE NOTES …
The bid for a third-straight championship came to an end for the South Forsyth golf team at the Big Red Shootout as the team finished fourth with 130 points. It was a narrow point margin separating the top four teams as North Forsyth won the tournament with a 134. Chris Guglielmo set the pace for South Forsyth posting 39 points followed by Austin Ujhelyi with 36 points. The team will play in the GA/SC cup this weekend held in Lexington, SC.
The West Forsyth girls lacrosse team improved their record to a perfect 7-0 as they beat Blessed Trinity 15-10 on Monday night. The second place Lady Wolverines found themselves in rather uncharted territory as they trailed at the half for only the second time this season. However, outscoring their opponent 9-3 in the second half, West secured the win. Nikki Erdely scored four goals moving her season total to a team-high 38. Taylor Hagin had five assists. The win puts the team alone in first place amongst Region 3, Class 4A competition. Earlier in the week, the team had another impressive start defeating county and region rival Lambert 17-8 fueled by another double-digit first half.
TRACK TEAMS PLACE HIGHLY …
Leah Hixson, Alex Merrall, and Emily McNutt, all members of the Etowah track and field team, competed at the Coaches Invitational held at Georgia Tech. Hixson, who is proving to be one of the top triple jumpers in the state, finished second behind Lassiter’s Julienne McKee. McKee finished third at the state Class 5A meet last year and jumped almost a full three feet further than Hixon in her winning effort. Alex Merrall ran a personal best in the boys 1,600-meter run finishing fifth with a time of 4:27.00. Emily McNutt finished seventh in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:14.37.
Creekview had three relay teams at the Coaches Invitational that finished in the top 10. The co-ed sprint medley team finished the highest in second place with a time of 4:01. The girls 3,200-meter relay team finished seventh (10:14.90), while the boys 3,200-meter relay teamed finished eighth (8:24.73). Next up for Creekview is a tri-meet with Sequoyah and River Ridge. The Grizzlies did suffer a setback last week when they lost long jumper and triple jumper Eric Cloy to injury. It is still unclear if Cloy will be back at all this season, which would be a big blow to the team as he was expected to bring in some much needed points on the region and state level. On the girls side, long distance runner Cori Dulmage is also injured and will not compete at region.
The West Forsyth girls tennis team remained perfect in region play at 9-0 after sweeps of Gainesville and Flowery Branch. The team gave up just two games overall to Gainesville in the decisive victory. As of press time, the Lady Wolverine sit in the driver’s seat to earn the No. 1 seed heading into the Region 7, Class 3A tournament with Lambert close behind in subregion play.
