The GHSA Cheerleading State Championships took over the Columbus Civic Center on Friday during the sectional qualifying for the state’s highest classes and the finals for Class A-Public, Class A-Private and co-ed seasons. The remaining classes will compete for their respective state titles on Saturday with Classes AA, AAA and AAAA scheduled at 9 a.m. and Classes AAAAA, AAAAAA and AAAAAAA competing at 2 p.m.
On Friday, Mount Paran won its eighth-consecutive A-Private state championship with a score of 101.5 ahead of Brookstone (79), Hebron Christian (71), Savannah Christian (70) and Calvary Day (65). Gordon Lee defended its Class A-Public title for the fourth season with a 99-point effort. The Generals finished ahead of Commerce (87), Lake Oconee Academy (77.5), Irwin County (60.6) and Bowdon (58.5). Mill Creek scored 105 points to defend its 2018 title in the co-ed competition ahead of Peachtree Ridge (100.5), North Gwinnett (99.5), Milton (97), Chapel Hill (97) and Forsyth Central (94).
In the sectional qualifying on Friday; Lambert, North Forsyth, West Forsyth, Lassiter, Newnan, Hillgrove, Cherokee and Tift County qualified for the Class AAAAAAA finals, in that order. In Class AAAAAA, Alexander, Harrison, Lee County, Cambridge, Allatoona, Dalton, Chattahoochee and Greenbrier will compete Saturday. In Class AAAAA, Woodland-Cartersville, Kell, Harris County, Starr’s Mill, Buford, Union Grove, Ware County and Veterans advanced to the finals.
Cedartown, West Laurens, Central-Carroll, Troup County, North Oconee, Perry, Stephens County and Flowery Branch will compete for the AAAA title. In Class AAA, Morgan County, East Jackson, Ringgold, Appling County, Greater Atlanta Christian, Sonoraville, Hart County and East Hall advanced through the sectionals. In Class AA, Bacon County, Model, Chattooga, Bleckley County, Pepperell, Rockmart, Coosa and East Laurens will compete in the finals.
