Players from 12 different North Fulton and Forsyth County schools/teams will make up the North squad for this year’s Chamber Bowl. Lambert’s Sid Maxwell will coach the North team with a staff consisting of coaches from North Forsyth, Pinecrest, South Forsyth, Johns Creek, North Georgia, Forsyth Central, St. Francis, Milton and King’s Ridge. The North team on paper appears extremely athletic with countless players capable of making plays at multiple positions.
Maxwell’s son Brock will be an option under center as will Johns Creek quarterback Skye Overton. Maxwell was a threat with his legs probably moreso than his arm this season for Lambert. Earlier this year against Roswell, Maxwell carried the ball 21 times for 105 yards and he toasted South Forsyth for three scores on the ground. This will likely be his last time on the gridiron as he will play baseball for South Carolina at the next level.
Overton can also burn you with his legs as he scored 11 touchdowns on the ground this season. He finished with more than 1,300 yards passing and nearly 900 yards rushing.
South Forsyth’s Jantzen Jeffrey is a dual-threat quarterback who has battled through injuries since October. The Air Force Academy likes Jeffrey’s athleticism and has offered the 6-foot, 205-pound athlete.
Other multipurpose quarterbacks on the roster include North Georgia Falcons QB/WR/RB Mike Randle and North Forsyth QB/RB/WR Justin Stanley. Sid Maxwell could use these backs on trick plays.
Teams must always be wary of Northview running back Terrence Upshaw. The 5-foot-10 back holds offers from Buffalo and Vanderbilt and was explosive throughout the season. He surpassed the 1,000-yard mark late in the year and was a threat to take any play to the house from anywhere on the field. He had 11 touchdowns of at least 40 yards this year. He finished with 27 rushing scores and has also scored on punt returns and kick returns this season.
Upshaw will be joined in the backfield by Lambert running back Daniel Myers, fullback Trevor T.J. Denny of North Georgia and fullback Garrett Bode of St. Francis.
Some of the X-factors to watch out for include Lambert’s Chandler Register, a wingback/wide receiver, and South Forsyth’s Jordan Arnett, a receiver possessing the ability to break a game wide open. Arnett hauled in three scores in a game earlier this year against Forsyth Central and he can run after the catch as he did against Lambert for a 55-yard score.
The offensive line will feature several big bodies that helped their teams advance to the postseason. Johns Creek center Sam Arrington and West Forsyth guard Will Bass and tackle Zach Bradbury will join Milton’s Connor Harp along the offensive line. Other linemen to watch out for include North Forsyth’s Colby Gossett, Northview’s Rohil Prathap and King’s Ridge Christian’s William Reagan.
Defensively, Johns Creek sends a pair of linebackers to the North roster in Tommy Welch and Zachary Disher. Those two will be joined by West Forsyth’s Josh Salo and Lambert’s Russell Monyette, among others.
Up front on the defensive line, Forsyth Central’s Ruben Rubio leads the charge. The 6-foot-1, 310-pound senior nose guard will offer plenty of push from the interior of the line.
In the secondary, Josh Gordon of West Forsyth joins Johns Creek’s Will Somers and South Forsyth’s Zach Laflamme.
Finally, Maxwell should know that he will have three points in the bank with Johns Creek kicker Kyle Fowler on his roster. The Gladiators kicker split a 52-yard attempt through the uprights earlier this year against Rome and then proved to have ice water in his veins by nailing a game-tying field goal with just seconds left against Chattahoochee.
