Cass’s Brodie McWhorter out for the rest of the 2024 season

Cass star quarterback Brodie McWhorter will miss the rest of the 2024 season after suffering a broken fibula and a dislocated ankle in last week’s game against Hiram.

McWhorter is a West Virginia-commit and the state’s top quarterback in the class of 2026. According to the 247Sports Composite ranking, he is the 308th-ranked player in the country, the 18th-ranked quarterback, and the 34th-ranked player in the state in his class. He was named First-Team All-Region 7-5A in both 2022 and 2023.

McWhorter helped the Colonels make their deepest playoff run since the 1983 season. His is the second major injury Cass has faced this season, with 3-star defensive lineman Kaden Ellis suffering a season-ending injury in the preseason.

Junior Elijah Slocum is expected to take over for McWhorter. He was listed as the backup going into the season and will bring a completely different aspect to the Cass offense. Slocum played wide receiver in the first four games, showing quality athleticism. He continued to show his speed after coming in for McWhorter against Hiram, while also proving to be a more than competent passer.

Slocum will have no shortage of weapons, including running back Braylon Hill, who will take some of the pressure off the passing game. He will be throwing to a group of explosive receivers, including Nazaire Fleurine, Chase Tatum, and Izak Koep. In addition he will be playing behind one of the premier offensive lines in the state, led by a pair of junior 4-star linemen, Bear McWhorter and Kail Ellis. Overall, the offensive line averages 272 pounds, with three linemen standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing over 270 pounds.

Next week, the Cavaliers will travel to Cedartown to face the seventh-ranked Bulldogs in a matchup that will have major playoff implications for Cass after losing the first game of region play last week against Hiram.
