Calhoun has received little respect from the polls throughout the season after two early losses to Dalton and Cartersville, but the Yellow Jackets (10-2) surely made a name for themselves in an impressive 38-20 win over visiting Westminster on Friday night.
The Jackets overcame an inauspicious start when Wildcats’ star halfback Stephon Shelton scampered for a long touchdown run early in the first quarter, leaving Calhoun in a 7-0 hole. Shelton, however, sustained a concussion late in the first half and did not return.
That left sophomore back Ralph David Abernathy to carry the entire Westminster offense in quarters three and four. Abernathy did the job admirably for a while, but eventually the Calhoun ‘D’ corralled the one-man show and helped the hosts pull away in the fourth.
The Yellow Jackets’ offense, on the other hand, fired on all cylinders for all four quarters with an array of weapons, led by receiver, Da’Rick Rogers, who towered over Westminster defensive backs. Not only did Rogers haul in a 55-yard touchdown pass, but his presence on the outside opened up pathways for other Calhoun wideouts, and especially running back Dustin Christian.
Calhoun will host a Class AA quarterfinal showdown against Toombs County (9-3).
