Mr. Basketball for the state of Georgia has committed to the UGA basketball squad. Marcus Thornton, a forward for Westlake High School, made the pledge to play for the Bulldogs on Wednesday.
Thornton committed to the Dawgs over Alabama, Texas and Georgia Tech. He had been committed to Clemson prior to Oliver Purnell leaving the Tigers for DePaul.
TENNIS AND GOLF MAKE NCAAS …
The No. 12 Georgia men’s tennis team advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating UNC-Greensboro and Florida State in the Athens Regional. The Bulldogs will face SEC rival Florida on Friday in Athens during the third round of the tournament. The No. 6 Gators have defeated UGA twice this season.
In the regional, the Bulldogs came back to beat No. 29 Florida State after trailing 3-1. Drake Bernstein led the charge, won in three sets in No. 4 singles to cap the Bulldog rally.
"We knew they were good, they have a top three about as good as anybody in the country," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz.
Chris Haack’s two-time national champion men’s golf squad will continue their postseason this weekend at the NCAA South Central Regional in Bryan, Texas. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Ooltewah, Tenn., on June 1-5.
"I don’t feel like the time off will affect us at all," Haack said. "We’re excited about this opportunity."
SWEPT AGAIN …
The Diamond Dawgs were swept again in SEC play, this time by the hated Florida Gators. The team has now lost 13 consecutive conference games. However, the Bulldogs lost two one-run decisions on the weekend against the No. 4 Gators. On Sunday, Florida scored seven runs in the sixth inning during a 9-3 victory.
"We played great for 26 of the 27 innings this weekend and that one inning got away from us today," said Georgia coach David Perno.
Georgia fell to 14-36 overall and 3-22 in conference play. The Dawgs will host Kentucky (29-23, 12-15) this weekend in the regular season finale.
