BULLDOG BEAT: Taylor returns to school while Cone joins Rangers

Injured Georgia baseball player Johnathan Taylor will return to school despite being drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft. Meanwhile outfield mate Zach Cone will leave school and join the Rangers, who drafted the junior with the 37th pick overall. Taylor injured his spine in February when he collided with Cone in the outfield during a game against Florida State. Since, he has been confined to a wheelchair and is in the process of rehabilitation. Upon returning to UGA next year, Taylor will continue his rehab and work on graduating.

COACH GILBERT …

Former Georgia linebacker Tony Gilbert has been named assistant strength and conditioning coach of the football team. Gilbert played between the hedges from 2000-2002 and is currently No. 10 all time in tackles at UGA with 328.

“I’m thrilled to have Tony as part of our strength staff and program,” said Richt. “His experience as a member of a UGA SEC championship team and an NFL player is a perfect combination for us. Our players will benefit greatly from his knowledge.”

The Macon native played for Jacksonville and Atlanta in the NFL after being drafted by Arizona in 2003.

“I’m very excited and thankful for the opportunity to come back and be a member of the staff here at Georgia,” Gilbert said. “This is where I played, went to school and graduated, so I consider it an honor to contribute once again to the program and to have an impact on young men’s lives. I’m really looking forward to it.”

REMATCH ON GRASS …

Former tennis player John Isner won his first-round match at Wimbledon in straight sets over Nicolas Mahut Tuesday. The contest was significant because it was a rematch of the pair’s epic first-round battle last season in the same tournament. The match officially lasted 11 hours but took three days to finish. The marathon fifth set included a record 138 games before Isner finally won, 70-68.

This time, however, the match went by much more quickly. Isner won in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, 7-6, and the match lasted just two hours and three minutes.
