Senior running back Caleb King was ruled academically ineligible according to an announcement on Friday by head coach Mark Richt. King will miss the 2011 season.
“It’s unfortunate Caleb will not be with us this season,” said Richt. “We wish him the best in whatever he decides to do; however, we have to move forward and this will provide more opportunities for others to step up.”
In 29 games with the Bulldogs, King ran for 1,271 yards on 255 carries.
Senior cornerback Brandon Boykin was named to the Jim Thorpe Award Watch List by the National College Football Awards Association on Monday. The award honors the nation’s top defensive back in the country. Boykin has also been named to watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award, College Football Performance Awards Defensive Back Award as well as the Kickoff Returner Award.
The Fayetteville native is Georgia’s current leader in interceptions with six and is the only person in SEC history to have three 100-plus yard plays (all kickoff returns).
Senior offensive linemen Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn were named to the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award watch list. The list was released on Tuesday. The award honors the nation’s top lineman, on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball. The two players have also been named to the Outland Trophy Award list as well. David Pollack won the Lombardi Trophy in 2004 and is the Bulldogs’ lone winner.
THE IMMORTALS …
Former players Bill Saye and John Brantley were selected by the City of Jacksonville’s Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame on Monday. The pair will be officially inducted on Oct. 28 in Jacksonville the day before the annual rivalry game.
An Athens native, Saye intercepted two passes, recovered a fumble and blocked the game-tying extra point in the 1954 game. The Bulldogs pulled off a 14-13 upset and prevented the Gators from making a bowl game or winning the conference title that season.
Brantley was a prolific tackling machine for Georgia in the mid-80s and played some of his best games in his home state of Florida. The Wildwood native had a team-high seven tackles and a sack in the 1985 upset of the No. 1 Gators.
