BULLDOG BEAT: Dawgs prepare for high-scoring Kentucky

Tonight’s game at Kentucky will mean a lot to Georgia’s season. With a win, the Dawgs keep themselves in the thick of the SEC East race. With a loss, Georgia can kiss their chances of a division title goodbye.

Mark Richt’s crew is winless on the road this season in three tries, with losses at South Carolina, Arkansas, and Colorado. Richt mentioned this week that he wanted to do things a bit differently in preparation for this trip.

“I talked to our coordinators after the Colorado game and said let’s not confuse anyone on either side of the ball,” Richt said Wednesday. “I didn’t see us playing as fast as we should, and I asked myself why. Was it the way we practiced? Are we giving our guys too much to think about? We revved it up in practice, we got more physical, we wanted more effort, and we said let’s see what happens. I think since then we’ve played full speed without hesitation and now with more confidence.”

In two games since the loss to the Buffaloes, Georgia gave up just 14 total points to Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The defense seems to be benefiting the most from the new philosophy.

“When you watch film and grade film, you look at the critical errors, the missed assignments and there’s less of that,” Richt added. “I attribute some of that to everybody understanding better what to do.”

NEW AND NOTES

Georgia leads the all-time series with the Wildcats 49-12-2. Despite losing last year’s contest in Athens, the Bulldogs have won 16 of 19. However, the Cats have won two of the past four.

The Bulldog defense has its work cut out for it this week. Kentucky is second in the conference in scoring averaging 35.3 points per game. The Cats are led by do-everything player Randall Cobb, who has scored nine touchdowns this season; three on the ground, five through the air and one on a return. UK quarterback Mike Hartline has been effective as well, throwing for 255.9 yards per game, which is second in the SEC. Running back Derrick Locke leads the Cats on the ground and is third in the conference in rushing yards per game, with 95.7.
