So close, yet so far away. That oft-used expression accurately describes the relationship between the SEC’s two brands of Bulldogs.
Georgia and Mississippi State have hooked up just four times since the conference went to divisions in 1992, with the Bulldogs from Athens taking all four games. UGA also leads the all-time series 16-5 and have won the last nine dating back to 1974.
Despite the recent success against the Maroon Bulldogs, Georgia struggled to defeat a bad MSU team in 2006 but held on for a 27-24 victory Between the Hedges.
BACK IN THE FOLD
Cornerback Branden Smith was sorely missed by Mark Richt’s defense last week and should play tonight. Smith, of Atlanta’s Washington High, missed the Arkansas game due to symptoms from a concussion.
Running back Caleb King, who also missed last week’s affair, was “close to 100 percent” and should play tonight as well. If he does play, it will be the first time this season that both King and Washaun Ealey have played in the same game thus far in 2010.
Offensive guard Chris Davis will return to the field tonight as well. He and Tanner Strickland will rotate at the position.
FAMILIAR FACE
State head coach Dan Mullen recruited Georgia QB Aaron Murray for Florida from the time he was a freshman at Plant High School. Mullen was hired by MSU after the 2008 Gator season, while Murray signed with UGA about the same time.
“Watching him develop now you see a guy who has a lot of talent, has a very, very strong arm and has the athletic ability to improvise and get himself out of trouble and make plays with his legs,” Mullen said earlier this week to the AJC.
