This past weekend was a busy one at the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational Tournament, hosted by Flowery Branch High School. Brookwood played two games last Saturday with mixed results, falling to Effingham County 10-6 before getting the best of defending Class AAAAAA champion Collins Hill3-1. In the Broncos’ nightcap, Amanda Ablon tossed a complete game while striking out 11 Collins Hill hitters. Kamryn Tillmin provided virtually all of Brookwood’s offense with one swing of the bat, as her three-run home run erased a 1-0 deficit and accounted for the final score.
New to Class AAAA,Buford is off to a perfect 6-0 start. The Wolves, who are looking for an eighth consecutive state championship, swept their way through the Hawk/Bulldog Invitational Tournament. They opened with a 7-3 victory over Archer last Friday before winning twice on Saturday, 6-3 over Jackson County and 10-3 at the expense of Grayson.
In Saturday’s first game against Jackson County, Buford scored five runs in the top of the second in part thanks to a bases-clearing double by senior Alexus Murray. Junior Baylee Sexton went 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base for the Wolves.
An intriguing matchup this Friday at Northwest Whitfield High School pits Buford against Calhoun. Like the Wolves, the Yellow Jackets are making a jump in classification after winning a 2013 state championship. Calhoun won it all in Class AA last fall and is now residing in Class AAA.
Wesleyan tried its hand at the Georgia Dugout Tournament and played two games last Saturday. The Wolves beat McIntosh 14-2 then succumbed to Starr’s Mill 4-3. Jameson Cavel had three hits-including two doubles-and three RBIs while also scoring twice against McIntosh. Cassie Henning and Riley Henning took care of the mound work in Wesleyan’s first game.
Notice must be taken of Heard County’s blistering start to the 2014 campaign. The Braves went 5-0 at last weekend’s Callaway Classic inLaGrange and outscored opponents by a combined score of 54-0. They won all five of their games via the mercy rule, including 15-0 over Manchester and LaGrange, 9-0 against Landmark Christian, 8-0 versus Hardaway and a 7-0 rout of Northside-Columbus in the title game. Junior pitcher Jordan Watson tossed 18 innings during the tournament, allowing just eight hits while striking out 34 batters. Watson also went 8-for-13 at the plate with a home run and eight RBIs.
