Brown is ‘ROW’; women’s soccer off to historic start

Freshman Torrie Brown has been named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week for volleyball. Brown, from Diamond Bar, Calif., totaled 29 kills and 11 digs in the Panthers’ three matches last weekend at the Georgia Invitational. She averaged 3.2 kills per set while hitting .254 for the weekend. … Volleyball has struggled out of the gate at 0-6 with losses to Furman, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Xavier and Arkansas. In Sunday’s loss to the Razorbacks, the Panthers were led by sophomore Ashley Jones and senior Liz Schaab, who each accounted for nine kills.

 

SOCCER NOTES 

Women’s soccer is off to a great start. As a matter of fact, it’s the best start in school history. Senior Kay Harbrueger scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to freshman Emily Dover to lead the  Panthers over Birmingham-Southern 3-0. Stephanie Cuccia scored her first goal of the season in the win. The win moves the Panthers to 5-0-0 on the season. “Birmingham-Southern played us better than anyone this year,” said head coach Domenic Martelli. “They were very organized, well-coached and composed. It was a battle the whole way.” Harbrueger continues to lead the CAA in goals scored with seven, and in points with 17.

The men’s soccer team dropped their season opener at Clemson on Sept. 1, a disappointing loss after jumping out to a 2-0 lead when seniors Dathan Knott and Linus Warendh scored two goals in the first half. Georgia State would lead through the 75-minute mark before Clemson began its rally. The host Tigers scored three goals in the final 11:48, including the game-winner with 4:13 left. … In their second game, Stephan Minyono, Ayokunle Lumpkin and Dathan Knott each scored a goal, leading Georgia State past Presbyterian College 3-0. Said head coach Kerem Daser, “After the Clemson game, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I believe that the seniors stepped up their game (against Presbyterian) and showed great leadership.”

 

AROUND CAMPUS 

Georgia State’s fourth annual CAA Blood Challenge will be held Sept. 23 on campus in the Sports Arena. The annual blood donor drive is competition among the 12 CAA universities to get the most pints. Georgia State partners with the American Red Cross for this event. For more information, call 404-413-4000. … Non-conference games against Georgia Tech, Florida State and Minnesota highlight the 2008-09 men’s basketball schedule. The Panthers open the regular season in the NABC Classic at Minnesota, where they will face host Minnesota, Bowling Green and Concordia-St. Paul in a three-day span, Nov. 14-16. … Take part in the Third Annual Golf Classic and support the Panthers. The event will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at the Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. For more information, call 404-413-4000. … Keeping an eye on CAA football, after two weeks of action there are six teams still ranked in the FCS Top 25 poll: Richmond, UMass, Delaware, James Madison, New Hampshire, and Villanova.
