In their first season under head coach Jared Zito, the Dacula Falcons advanced to the Class AAAAA quarterfinals before falling to state finalist Walton 21-13. Quarterback Rocky Capobianco and company finished 9-4 on the year, but managed to take out Brookwood, South Gwinnett Archer, Parkview, Norcross and Newnan over the course of the season after starting the year 0-2. The Falcons once again started slow this year, going 0-5 to begin the year, but much like 2011, Dacula hopes the Brookwood game can once again begin a run that leads into the playoffs.
In 2011, Dacula took down Brookwood 20-6, but this Broncos team will face a much different Falcons team from one year ago. Capobianco is gone, leaving Brandon Goodson as the team’s starting quarterback and Marcus Cox as his main weapon. The two are trying to replace the 60 percent of the offense that Capobianco provided in 2011. Goodson scored the team’s lone touchdown in the loss to Grayson while Cox provided 134 yards and a pair of scores in a loss to South Gwinnett. The key for Dacula will be finding playmakers on defense to hold Brookwood out of the end zone.
BRONCOS BUSTING
Brookwood has rebounded since getting shredded at the Georgia Dome by Walton’s Tyren Jones. The Broncos knocked off Mill Creek 31-21 and edged Archer 20-19 entering the Battle of Five Forks-Trickum. Zach Moon has looked solid at quarterback and passed for 179 yards and one score against Archer. Ky Priester has proven to be a force at wide receiver with three scores and 228 yards on 14 receptions. Jamaal Cole and Josh Brown have also presented a nice rushing attack with Adam Ledford leading an always-stout Brookwood line. Brown rushed for 243 yards against Mill Creek, while Cole has scored six times and rushed for 362 yards in Brookwood’s first three games.
Defensively, Shaun McGee, a UGA commit, has been a star, shifting from defensive end to linebacker. He had 12 tackles, five for a loss and one sack against Archer. Chris Dancy, Matt Price and Liam Trainor are also active for Mark Crews’ defense.
These two teams will be looking at this game as an important region matchup that will likely have huge playoff implications. If Dacula wants to make the playoffs, the Falcons cannot afford another region loss while Brookwood looks to keep pace near the top of the region. In the loaded Region 8-AAAAAA standings, this could certainly be viewed as a play-in game.
