The second day of the Brent Key/Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic 7-on-7 Tournament brought together more of the most talented players and teams in the state to compete at three locations across Georgia Tech’s campus – Brock Indoor, Rose Bowl and historic Bobby Dodd Stadium.
And after an undefeated showing including a 28-17 victory over Douglas County in the title game, Milton won the day two championship with Georgia Tech’s coaching staff looking on. The two programs will likely be ranked atop Class 6A (Douglas County) and Class 5A (Milton) in the upcoming season and it is fitting the two teams entered the 7-0n-7 championship without suffering a loss in pool or bracket play.
“It’s a team with high temptation and a lot of experience and leadership,” said Milton head coach Ben Reaves, who coached the Eagles to a state championship last season in Class 7A. “That is what they are expected to do is play for, compete and win championships.”
Milton opened the day with pool play victories over Wheeler 35-13, Sequoyah 39-12, Centennial 34-9 and Callaway 31-2. The Eagles defeated Miller Grove 44-6 and ELCA 40-5 in the elimination bracket, earning the berth in the championship. Milton enjoyed a BYE in the first round of the championship bracket before beating Sandy Creek 21-4 and the Tigers.
“We know how talented we are,” Reaves said. “But there’s so much talent in this state alone.”
Douglas County had pool play victories over Sandy Creek 22-13, Newton 28-22, Drew 27-2 and GAC 35-26. In the elimination bracket, the Tigers beat Walnut Grove 36-2 and Centennial 33-15 before beating GAC 25-2 and Archer 32-20 to earn the championship game berth.
“To be able to come out and prove this against one of the other top teams in the state,” Reaves said. “It makes it that much sweeter to beat somebody who is so good.”
