BREAKING: Dunwoody hires OC Matthew Schmitz as next head football coach

Dunwoody has found the 11th coach in its program’s long history as Matthew Schmitz has been selected to lead the future of the Wildcats football program.

Having served as the offensive coordinator and the quarterbacks coach at Dunwoody for the last three seasons, Schmitz is familiar with the program and is excited for the future leading the football team.

“Coach Nash told me when I got here, ‘If you love Dunwoody, it’ll love you back,’” said Schmitz. “Dunwoody has been amazing for me and my family, and I truly love working with these kids. There’s no place I would rather be. I’m excited for what’s ahead and eager to keep growing this program.”

Schmitz is taking over for longtime Dunwoody head coach Mike Nash who led the Wildcats football program for 10 seasons after he left the program for a new start as the Chattahoochee County head football coach.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Nash and it’s been an incredible journey working with him,” said Schmitz. “When he decided to move to Chattahoochee – after getting support from our players, staff, and special people throughout the school and community- I knew I wanted to continue building on the strong foundation he established.”

Under Nash last season from his offensive coordinator and quarterback coach roles, Schmitz helped the Wildcats earn back-to-back playoff appearances for the first time since the 2008-09 seasons.

Schmitz’s offense a season ago totaled the most yardage per game in school history with the help of DeKalb County all-time leading receiver, Danny Boden and Porter Allison who ranks in the top-five in three major categories such as touchdowns, receptions and yards.

Schmitz has had plenty of coaching experience in all levels of the sport including a stint as a head coach at Newport High School in Kentucky as well as offensive coordinator spots at Clinton High School in Tennessee and Sickles High School in Tampa, FL.

In the college ranks, Schmitz has held positions such as passing game coordinator, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee Tech, quality control coach at UAB as well as quarterbacks coach at the US Merchant Marine Academy.

Schmitz and his Dunwoody Wildcats will kick off their season in the 2025 Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic against St. Pius X on Saturday, August 16 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
