This weekend at the Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta, over 800 youth volleyball teams will compete in the Big South National Qualifier. A total of over 8,000 girls players will participate along with 1,100 club coaches and over 300 college coaches in the three-day tournament.
The qualifier is one of nine national tournaments that narrow the field down for the USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships. It is the nation’s largest indoor volleyball tournament held over one weekend and is in its 20th year of existence.
Over 38,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance and the event will bring in approximately $19 million to the city of Atlanta.
The three-day tournament will feature over 800 teams in 12 age groups that compete for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals and qualification in the USAs. Participants have traveled to Atlanta from 33 different states, including Puerto Rico. Also, 140 teams are from the state of Georgia. Florida, Illinois, California and Texas will send the most teams out of the other states.
The event lasts from Friday to Sunday and will begin at 8 a.m. each morning.
