Big plays bring Wolverines close in overtime loss

The football team fell in overtime last Friday 15-9 to Southwest DeKalb in a defensive battle. Devonte Phillips and Jonathan Brooks were a couple of the standouts defensively for the Wolverines (0-1-1). Quarterback Mydrikus Ealey hit Stephen Hill for an 80-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 6-6 late in the third quarter and that was the score after four. Jesse Curney kicked a 26-yard field goal in overtime, but Southwest DeKalb (1-1) also kicked a field goal and scored a touchdown in the second overtime to get the win. The Wolverines play Stone Mountain on Friday. … The softball team lost a heartbreaker to Lithonia last week, 7-6. Crystal Richmond has led the Wolverines’ offense all season long and had a good game against the Bulldogs. Chelsea Bromet had a good outing on the mound as well, but unforced errors in the second inning led to several Lithonia runs. The team later lost to North Springs, 12-2. The Wolverines were up 2-1 in the fifth inning thanks to a couple of RBIs from Richmond. However, defense once again let Miller Grove down with unforced errors.
