
The ending of GHSA basketball season signifies the shift from Winter to Spring sports and Sandy Creek’s boys and Cherokee Bluff’s girls will enjoy the transition.
The Sandy Creek boys team defeated Cedar Grove 39-38 in the championship game to secure the program’s third-straight state championship. On the girls side, Cherokee Bluff ousted Class 4A defending champion Baldwin 66-58 to win the program’s first-ever title.

While moving focus to Spring sports, let’s take a glance at the rankings on the boys side of the golf season where a new-look shift will alter the sport after reclassification moved the private schools into their own Class 1A-3A Private class in the playoffs.

Last season, Wesleyan defended its title for the second year in the row but now, the public schools will have a clearer-cut chance at the championship. West Laurens boys are ranked atop Class 3A’s boys golf poll. LaGrange, Cherokee Bluff, North Hall and Richmond Academy are in the top 5 while Southeast Bulloch, Jefferson, Oconee County, Cairo and Bainbridge fill the top 10.
On the girls side, Savannah Christian has won the past two golf championships in Class 3A and now, things are more wide-open. White County is ranked atop the standings with North Hall, Jefferson, Cherokee Bluff and Southeast Bulloch in the top 5.
On the baseball field, Harlem – a nine-time champion – won the past two Class 3A titles and leads the standings ahead of Pickens, Oconee County, LaGrange and Troup in the top 5. Peach County, Dawson County, North Hall, Cherokee Bluff and Whitewater round out the top 10.
On the soccer pitch, Northwest Whitfield tops the boys standings ahead of Oconee County, Whitewater, Chestatee and Johnson-Gainesville. For the girls, Oconee County is the top-ranked team to beat ahead of Dawson County, Jefferson, Lumpkin County and Cherokee Bluff.
On the tennis court, for the boys, LaGrange sophomore Ethan Black leads the Region 2 standings with an 8-2 record and Mary Persons sophomore Benjamin Morris is 4-1, both in singles. LaGrange (14-2) is atop the Region 2 standings ahead of Whitewater (8-1) and Mary Persons (5-1). Monroe Area tops the Region 8 standings with a 5-0 record ahead of 4-1 Cherokee Bluff. In Region 7 Calhoun (5-0) leads Heritage-Catoosa (4-2) and Northwest Whitfield (4-3). Murray County tops Region 6 (2-0) while Southeast Bulloch (3-3) leads Region 3.
For the girls tennis season, Whitewater (7-3) leads the Region 2 standings ahead of LaGrange (9-6) and Mary Persons (5-2). Southeast Bulloch (6-1) tops the Region 3 standings ahead of Islands (5-6). Calhoun (4-0) leads Region 7 ahead of Heritage-Catoosa (4-1). Monroe Area (5-0) is ranked atop the Region 8 standings ahead of Oconee County (3-0), Cherokee Bluff (4-4) and Jefferson (3-1).
An historic look back at a Class 3A championship feat – In 1988-89, Carrollton’s boys team won the Class 3A team track and field championship with 67 points ahead of Westminster (44), Winder-Barrow (36.5) and Franklin County (36). Carrollton’s Lamount Byrd won first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 110-meter hurdles while Carrollton’s Judd Costley won the pole vault. The Carrollton team of Chris Crowder, Arlando Daniel, John Wynn and Byrd won the 400-meter relay.
