Baseball Rankings: Lakeside-DeKalb sweeps Rockdale County

It was a rain soaked week, but there still was some movement in the polls. No. 6 Lakeside-DeKalb (20-3, 11-1) swept a three game series with Rockdale County (9-12, 6-6). The Vikings outscored the Bulldogs 24-4 highlighted by a 15-0 series ending victory in which Lakeside-DeKalb allowed just one hit. Also in 6A, No. 10 Mountain View (17-6, 9-2) makes its debut in the polls after East Coweta (14-6, 10-1) dropped out. The Bears have won six-straight games and are tied with North Gwinnett (16-7, 9-2) atop the Region 7-AAAAAA standings.

A huge Region 4-AAAAA two game series saw No. 2 Union Grove (17-2, 15-1) split with No. 6 Ola (19-4, 8-3). Ola rallied to win game one 3-1, scoring three runs in the final two frames. Matthew Mammatas and Tyler Sullivan both drove in runs. Union Grove’s offense was led by two hits from Jake Kaufman. The Wolverines would take care of business two days later and win 6-1, to clinch a sub-region championship. No. 3 Gainesville (17-5, 12-3), who swapped places with Union Grove in the rankings, received six shutout innings from Mikey Gonzalez in his first varsity start to defeat Flowery Branch (12-8, 7-7) 3-0.

Class 4A saw no shift in the poll as the rankings stayed the same. Top-ranked Buford (21-2) defeated White County (8-15, 6-7) behind a strong pitching performance from Jake Higginbotham. The Clemson-signee allowed just one hit over his six innings of work en route to a 4-0 shutout. West Virginia-signee Connor Bennett closed the door in the seventh. Georgia Tech-commit Nick Wilhite and Griffin Jollif provided the offense with back-to-back homers.

Blessed Trinity (20-2, 13-0) and Pierce County (23-1, 18-0) both have a stranglehold on the top two spots in 3A. No. 8 Decatur (17-6, 10-3) had a chance to make a statement in Region 4-AAA on Tuesday against Blessed Trinity, but the Bulldogs could not hold onto an early lead. Decatur held a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, but could not stop the bleeding as the Titans scored in each of the next four innings to pull away for a 6-3 win. Homers from Conor Davis and John Castro led the way. The Bulldogs will have another chance to pick up a signature win as they are scheduled to host No. 6 Westminster (16-7, 12-1) on Monday.

Benedictine (17-5, 11-0) saw its 11-game win streak come to an end last Monday with a non-region loss to South Effingham (18-5, 11-3) by a final of 9-5. The Cadets rebounded with a 3-1 win over Jeff Davis (14-7, 8-3), who is now bounced from the polls. Benedictine holds steadfast at No. 3 in Class AA after its most recent victory. No. 2 Lovett (18-3, 10-1) kept pace with No. 1 Wesleyan (18-3, 8-1) after a big 7-2 win over No. 4 Greater Atlanta Christian (15-4-1, 5-2-1) last Tuesday.

No. 1 King’s Ridge Christian (18-2, 12-1) remains in the driver’s seat in Class A, but two tough tests loom as the Tigers close out their regular season. King’s Ridge must visit No. 7 Whitefield Academy (16-4, 10-3) on Wednesday then travel to No. 4 Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (14-3, 6-0) this Saturday.
