Former Lassiter High School and Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen died in a car accident Sunday morning. Auburn athletics department released the tragic news early Sunday and the news confirmed driver Ian Davis was also killed while the other two passengers were taken to West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.

According to the police report, the vehicle ran a stop sign and lost control for about 450 feel before flipping multiple times. Lutzenkirchen and the driver, Davis, were ejected out of the vehicle. According to the report, blood was taken to see if Davis was intoxicated at the time of the crash, but the results are yet to be announced.

Lutzenkirchen earned second team All-SEC and finished his Auburn career with 14 touchdowns, most all-time for his position while helping lead the Tigers offense to the 2010 National Championship.

On the high school level, Lutzenkirchen was one of the best players to ever come out of Cobb County and recorded 72 receptions for 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns his senior season. As a junior, he hauled in 46 receptions for 496 yards and seven scores while adding 48 tackles, an interception and a blocked punt. He was named a consensus Class 5A All-State as a senior by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Sports Writers Association and appeared in all 13 games his next season at Auburn.

Lutzenkirchen signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent after college but has since been working and volunteer coaching at an Alabama High School.

Score Atlanta president IJ Rosenberg commented on the news.

“This is a shocker and one of the best kids I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with in high school … Always smiling, always in a good mood, always filled with “yes sir” and “how can I help” … I will never forget the play he made when he was at Lassiter and while falling out of the end zone pushed the ball back in bounds to another receiver for a TD against Centennial … we were webcasting the game and the replay went viral on the web and I think he may have won an ESPY for it … I was just talking about Lutz to one of his former coaches the other day … He will be truly missed … RIP Philip …”
