Atlanta Beat supports YWCA 5k

Members of the Atlanta Beat staff will join the YWCA in the First Annual Peace, Love & Dignity 5K and One Mile “Skirt” Run in downtown Kennesaw, Georgia on Sunday, Oct. 25. The run/walk event supports victims of domestic violence while providing a lighthearted, community event for the entire family.

“This race is all about empowering women,” said Jen Plante, Atlanta Beat Director of Player and Community Relations. “Our players are strong role models in the community, and we are proud to support a partner like the YWCA. I think anything we can do to stop violence against women is an important way for us to give back.”

The course begins in front of Kennesaw City Hall and concludes at Adams Park. All 5K participants will begin their run at 7:45 a.m. before the one mile runners hit the course an hour later. Running in skirts is optional. However, the most creative skirt design and the top finishers for each age category will win a prize.

About the YWCA

Women come to the YWCA in times of crisis, as survivors of rape or domestic violence. They come for job training and career counseling. They come for childcare. They come for health and fitness. They come for a variety of reasons. But they come. And they leave with a renewed spirit, new skills, and stronger lives.

The YWCA mission is to eliminate racism and empower women as they provide safe places for women and girls, build strong women leaders, and advocate for women’s rights and civil rights in Congress.

About the Atlanta Beat

The Atlanta Beat joins Women’s Professional Soccer as one of two expansion teams in the 2010 season.

In September 2008, Atlanta entrepreneur Fitz Johnson secured the rights to the Atlanta team before naming Shawn McGee as General Manager and unveiling the team name, logo and colors in June 2009.

McGee hired Head Coach Gareth O’Sullivan in August, and the team acquired the first official players through the 2009 WPS Expansion Draft and WPS International Draft in mid-September. The Atlanta Beat will complete its roster with the 2010 WPS Draft in January and will begin play in Spring 2010.

The Atlanta Beat takes on the same name as the market’s former Women’s United Soccer Association team which was the only WUSA club to reach the playoffs every season.

The Beat’s colors are Ferrari Red, Champion Gold, and Black.
