A four-year student manager on Allatoona’s boys basketball squad, Connor Thompson never thought he’d get a chance to hit the floor for a game, much less make a shot. But Buccaneers coach Markus Hood talked to Thompson’s parents two weeks ago and hatched a plan to have Thompson dress out for the first time in his four-year career for Senior Night.
After letting his senior players get one last home ovation, Hood sent Thompson into the game. Off an inbounds play with seconds left, the Bucs got the ball to Thompson who heaved up a three-pointer. No one expected it to go in, as Thompson didn’t make a shot during warmups.
“He is hard-pressed to make layups,” said Hood.
But the shot went in, and the crowd went nuts.
“It was great,” said Hood. “I can’t tell you how many tears were shed in the place.”
“It was divine intervention.”
