Agent Eight Zeros: Arenas worth $100 million?

Gilbert Arenas is so selfless. We should really give this man some kind of award. Who’s in charge of voting for the Sportsman of the Year? They need to be contacted so we can make sure Agent Zero is a candidate. He re-signed with the Wizards for a measly $111 million when he could have had $127 million. He did it so the Wizards won’t be strapped three years down the road. That’s a really great move by him since he’ll probably be walking with a cane three years from now.

I’m amazed that Washington offered him anything close to $100 million. I guess they didn’t take into consideration the facts that a) he has a bum knee; b) they finished in the same place without him that they would have finished with him; c) He is not Kobe Bryant, LeBron James or Tim Duncan. In other words, he’s not worth $100 million.

Arenas is arguably the best player on Washington’s team, but he’s not the kind of transcendent player who’s capable of taking his team to the Finals or even the second round of the playoffs if we’re being honest. The Wizards are, at best, about a 45-win team. So now that they’ve re-signed Arenas (under the assumption he’s going to be healthy), does this make them a better team? Are they all of a sudden better than Cleveland, Orlando, Detroit or Boston? I seriously doubt it, but we’ll have a few years to see how it all plays out.

I don’t understand why teams are trying to overpay free agents just because they’re the best available players this summer. Sometimes you have to be a little patient. The free agent class in a couple of years is going to be loaded. There are no guarantees that you’ll get one of those elite players, but I’d take my chances. Having said all of that, the Hawks absolutely must re-sign Josh Smith. If Gil is worth $111 million then Josh is certainly worth $67 million.
