Afternoon Roundup: Falcons get some Corner help; Oudin advances

The Atlanta Falcons made a move today to shore up its glaring weakness in the defensive secondary, acquiring CB Tye Hill from the St. Louis Rams for a 7th round 2010 draft pick. Hill was the Rams first round pick, 15th overall in 2006 after a career at Clemson and started 10 of 16 games his rookie season. He finished with three interceptions that year and for his career has started 21 of 28 games though he has missed some time the last two years to injuries. The Falcons have now traded its 2010 second round selection for Tony Gonzalez and its seventh round pick for Hill. The team made three other moves, cutting TE Ben Hartsock, DE Willie Evans and CB Von Hutchins. With the moves, the roster currently sits at 73 players.

Local tennis phenom Melanie Oudin is hoping to stage another lengthy run in a grand slam event to follow up her incredible run at this year’s Wimbledon tournament. The 17-year-old Oudin dispatched Russia’s Anastasia Pavylyuchenkova 6-1, 6-2. Oudin would either face No.4 Elena Dementieva or Camille Pin.

Finally the Minnesota Timberwolves say that No.5 overall pick Ricky Rubio reportedly backed out of a deal that would have put the 18 year-old in an NBA uniformthis season. Rubio reportedly told his agent that he would prefer to stay in Spain for two more seasons to better prepare for the NBA.
