Region tournaments are at center stage this week for Class 3A to prepare each region’s respective seeding for the state tournament.
On the boys side of the class, Region 1 begins play Tuesday when Bainbridge travels to Peach County and Cairo treks to Dougherty.
In Region 2, Mary Persons beat Trinity Christian 65-61 Saturday but lost to Troup 71-54 Monday. Also Monday, Whitewater defeated Spalding 67-63. Whitewater will travel to Upson-Lee Tuesday and Troup goes to LaGrange.
The ‘Savannah Region’ 3 opened play Monday and Johnson-Savannah beat Southeast Bulloch 59-41 and Islands defeated Groves 72-63. On Tuesday, Windsor Forest will play Johnson-Savannah, Beach will play Long County, Calvary Day faces Islands and Liberty County plays Jenkins.
In Region 4 play, Richmond Academy beat Hephzibah 56-44 and Harlem upended Howard 77-54 Monday to set up Tuesday’s schedule of Baldwin at Richmond Academy and West Laurens vs. Harlem.
In Region 5, Mt. Zion-Jonesboro beat Stone Mountain 65-61 Monday and will continue play Wednesday when Riverdale meets North Clayton, Douglass plays Stephenson and Luella takes on Mt. Zion-Jonesboro.
Region 6 opens play Wednesday when North Hall meets Dawson, Lumpkin County plays White County, GAC takes on Chestatee and Pickens plays Johnson-Gainesville.
In Region 7, Heritage-Catoosa defeated Ridgeland Monday and on Wednesday, Gilmer will play LaFayette and Northwest Whitfield will face Heritage-Catoosa. Monroe Area defeated Oconee County 52-43 and Cherokee Bluff beat West Hall 61-46 Monday which set up the Wednesday schedule where Jefferson plays Cherokee Bluff and East Hall faces Monroe Area.
On the girls side, Bainbridge beat Peach County 53-32 and Westover defeated Cairo 55-28 Monday to set up Thursday’s schedule where Dougherty plays Westover and Monroe faces Bainbridge.
In Region 2, Spalding beat Whitewater 36-30 Saturday, Upson-Lee beat Spalding 70-49 and LaGrange defeated Mary Persons 41-37 Monday. Troup will play Upson-Lee and Sandy Creek faces LaGrange Tuesday evening.
Region 3 opens play Tuesday with a four-game schedule – Southeast Bulloch vs. Liberty County, Groves vs. Jenkins, Long County vs. Calvary Day and Beach vs. Windsor Forest.
In Region 4 play, Hephzibah beat Aquinas 59-37 and West Laurens faced Harlem Monday, setting up Tuesday’s schedule. In Region 5, Riverdale beat Stone Mountain 46-41 Monday and on Tuesday, Cedar Grove will play Douglass, North Clayton meets Mt. Zion-Jonesboro and Stephenson takes on Riverdale.
Region 6 play opens Tuesday when Dawson meets GAC, Chestatee plays North Hall, White County takes on Lumpkin and Pickens plays Johnson-Gainesville. In Region 7, play continues Tuesday when Northwest Whitfield plays Adairsville and Heritage-Catoosa meets LaFayette. In Region 8, East Hall defeated Monroe Area 64-34 and Cherokee Bluff upended West Hall 67-26 Monday. Teams will continue play Wednesday when Oconee County meets Cherokee Bluff and Jefferson plays East Hall.
