BULLDOG BEAT: Dawgs down Buffs, improve to 2-0

Similar to another Georgia athletics program, the Georgia men’s basketball squad is missing a star had Colorado scheduled in the first half ht eseason. But unlike their football counterparts, the hoops team is undefeated without their superstar, Trey Thompkins. Thompkins will return in about a month but the Bulldogs are winning without him.

Despite blowing a 17-point first half lead, Georgia held on to defeat Colorado 83-74 on Tuesday night in Athens. Transfer point guard Gerald Robinson led the team with 21points and six assists and also helped seal the game inside the final minute with two free throws.

“That was a real hard-fought game,” said head coach Mark Fox. “We beat a well-coached Colorado team who I was extremely impressed with. This is a good win for our team. We got off to a great start, got in some foul trouble and gave up the lead but I was proud that we were able to play well and come back down the stretch.”

Georgia led 27-10 with 7:42 left in the first half but watched as the Buffaloes chipped away at the lead and eventually tied it at 33 by halftime. Colorado actually took the lead a few times in the second half before the Dawgs pulled away down the stretch.

Point guards Robinson and Dustin Ware were the difference according to Fox.

“Dustin Ware and Gerald Robinson both played like upperclassmen in the final minutes,” Fox said. “They made the right plays and kept us organized. It helps us to have experience like this. Close, hard-fought games will help us down the road.”

Guard Travis Leslie fouled out with 3:27 remaining, but still managed 19 points and eight boards while Jeremy Price scored 17 points.

The  Bulldogs will travel to St. Louis on Nov. 20 for their next game.
